Pudhu Nellu Pudhu Naathu (transl. New Rice Seedlings) is a 1991 Indian Tamil-language film directed by Bharathiraja. This film marked the debut for supporting artist Napoleon as well as leading actress, Sukanya. It was released on 15 March 1991.
The film tells the story of battle between a ruthless moneylender played by Napoleon and the family who was is victim who find their footing, climbs back up and seeks vengeance with the women in both families becoming pawns. This is a successful village movie with very good songs.
Pudhu Nellu Pudhu Naathu is the debut film for Napoleon and Sukanya as actors; the former was then 27 years old, playing a character more than twice his age. The film also marked the acting debut of Raj Arjun, brother of actresses Radha and Ambika. Renuka joined the film as she expected it to be a career breakthrough. Arivumathi worked as an assistant director after a previous film he started, Ullen Ayya, was shelved.
The music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja.
Sundarji of Kalki praised the performances of Suganya and Napolean though felt casting young people in old age roles gave a play like feel but praised Bharathiraja's direction, scenes and making while also citing the plot have lot of loopholes and flaws but everything gets overshadowed.
Sukanya won the Cinema Express Award for Best New Face Actress.
