Shooting of D'Monterrio Gibson

Shooting of D'Monterrio Gibson

On January 24, 2022, D'Monterrio Gibson (born c. 1998), a 24-year-old black delivery driver who was delivering packages for FedEx, was shot at. Gibson was reportedly driving a Hertz rental van bearing "Hertz markings on the side." According to reports, Gibson had delivered a package to an incorrect address and retrieved it from a Junior Trail NE residence, after which he was chased, shot at, and injured by two men, Brandon Case and his father Gregory, in Brookhaven, Mississippi.

The event has been compared to the murder of Ahmaud Arbery in February 2020.

Criminal Proceedings

Brandon was charged with aggravated assault and weapons charges and Gregory was charged with conspiracy, though Gibson's lawyers asked for more serious charges to be brought. The Cases were released on bond one day after being charged. In November 2022, the aggravated assault charges were upgraded to attempted first-degree murder and Gibson's lawyers have called for a federal hate crime probe into the shooting. The trial began on August 15, 2023. However, two days later the judge granted the defense motion for a mistrial citing a video not being turned over to the prosecution or defense by the Brookhaven Police Department.
