Nigeria–Palestine relations


Nigeria–Palestine relations refer to foreign relations between Nigeria and the State of Palestine.

Nigeria supports a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Abu Shawesh is the Palestinian Ambassador in Nigeria. Nura Abba Rimi is the ambassador of Nigeria to Palestine based in Egypt.

History

Nigeria recognized Palestinian statehood on 18 November 1988. Nigeria has voted in favor of Palestine at the United Nations.

In 2012, Nigeria voted in favor of Palestine becoming a non-member observer at the United Nations, member of UNESCO, but voted against full member status at the United Nations.

Goodluck Jonathan, President of Nigeria, visited Palestine and Israel in 2014. The Supreme Council for Shari'ah in Nigeria and its president Sheikh Abdur-Rasheed Hadiyatullah criticized the government of Israel for the killing of innocents during the 2023 Israel-Hamas war. Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission suspended activities due to the war. The Islamic Movement in Nigeria called on the government to sever ties with Israel over the war. Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs called for a ceasefire. Christian Association of Nigeria and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria called for Nigeria to maintain neutrality. Abdallah Abu Shawesh, Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Nigeria, sought support from Nigeria to end the war. Nigeria cancelled a trip by Prime Minister Petr Fiala of Czech Republic over his stance on the war and voting against a ceasefire.
